In the project 'Under the Surface' Tevet creates an ambiguity between a functional object and a sculptural artifact. Tevet constrains himself to working within a closed square space, which he envelopes in a coffee table. In the space beneath the table he places objects, surfaces and details that impart it with the complexity of an inner space.
The surface of the table is bare and exposed, and only the colorful blobs and glares that infiltrate from beneath it force the viewer to kneel and peek into the allegedly hidden scenario.
In the inner space under the table two chairs that would have fitted a higher table are accurately packed. The relation between the scale of the chairs and the low table makes them seem meticulously compressed, as though they are about to burst out of the frame.
A semi-clear surface, a mirror and bright colors deceive the viewer and make it harder to decipher the complexity of the event. Is the precise geometry meant to insinuate a fine taste, comfort and 'bon ton'? Or suggest a wild rupture that spun out of control? Can the shut eye be recognized as a ferocious wink of a natural blink? Is the relationship between the table and what is under it a human symbol? An image of a couple's relationship? Or perhaps a self portrait?
